Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with Yayoi Kusama turns the Horizon 55 into something closer to a travelling canvas than conventional luggage. The Monogram Eclipse canvas provides the familiar Louis Vuitton foundation, but Kusama’s painted dots interrupt the pattern with the repeated motif that has defined much of the Japanese artist’s visual language. The 55 cm format is designed around the realities of modern travel, giving the suitcase a compact profile while retaining enough capacity for a short trip. What makes this particular Horizon interesting is the tension between Vuitton’s historic luggage codes and Kusama’s obsessive repetition: one is rooted in travel heritage, the other in an instantly recognisable contemporary art practice.
